Syrian general defects to Turkey, Al-Qaeda members crossing into Syria

A general in the elite Syrian Republican Guards has defected to Turkey, a news website said on Thursday.

It was the first such reported defection of a high-ranking military supporter of President Bashar al-Assad since the rebellion against him started 16 months ago.

"A high level security source has confirmed the fleeing of General (Manaf) Tlas to Turkey," the Syriasteps website, which has links to the Syrian security apparatus, said, and quoted a security official as saying: "His escape does not mean anything."

In turn, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said head of Syrian National Council AbdulBaset Sieda will be in Moscow to hold talks next week.

This as he dismissed suggestions that Russia may grant political asylum to Assad.

For its part, Iraq said that militants loyal to al-Qaeda were crossing into Syria to carry out attacks.

"We have solid information and intelligence that members of al Qaeda terrorist networks have gone in the other direction, to Syria, to help, to liaise, to carry out terrorist attacks," Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari told a news conference in Baghdad.

Western and Arab states who want Assad to step down to help end the crisis meet in Paris on Friday as the "Friends of Syria", a group that excludes Assad's main backer, Russia, and fellow U.N. Security Council veto-holder China.

Diplomatic efforts by a divided international community have so far been ineffective in stopping the violence.

Residents said mortar bombs were exploding in central districts of Homs, Syria's third largest city, where whole neighborhoods have been destroyed. Despite repeated assaults by Assad's forces, rebels have still managed to keep a foothold.

For his part and through an interview with a Turkish Daily, Syrian President Bachar Assad expressed grief for the violence applied by his troops on the onset of upraises in Syria. “We are only human and are bound to make mistakes, those protesters were funded by foreign countries to create chaos in Syria” he said.

Assad added that he still holds his position through the support of his people.
