African Union Summit kicks off in Addis Ababa

Regional security and the election of a new chair were expected to top the agenda at the 19th African Union (AU) Assembly in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Sunday.

Ethiopia's "Capital" newspaper declared the battle for chair a 'showdown' between incumbent, Gabonese administrator Jean Ping, and South African home affairs minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

The pair went head-to-head in an election in January, but neither candidate was able to secure the required two-thirds majority.
