Foreign Affairs Ministry comments on Israel sinking Lebanese boat in 1982

After Israel admitted that it sank a Lebanese boat carrying Lebanese migrants off the coast of the northern city of Tripoli in 1982, the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs voiced its rejection to the investigations’ results.

The ministry said that it rejected the results that considered the captain’s order to torpedo the boat as a mistake and not as a war crime.

The ministry also called members of the United Nations Security Council to condemn Israel and to issue resolutions against it so its crimes won’t remain “unpunished.”

Israel officially admitted on Thursday to sinking a boat carrying Lebanese migrants off the coast of Tripoli, killing 25 people.

The sinking took place in June 1982 while Israel was imposing a naval blockade on Lebanon, according to Israeli Channel 10 news.

The Israeli submarine captain, identified as Major A. has admitted to sinking the boat after he believed that it is carrying Palestinian fighters fleeing the Israeli army.

He then ordered two torpedoes to be fired at the boat, sinking it.
