Fate of Syrian refugees at Rukban camp unknown with US troops preparing to withdraw

The region at the Syrian-Jordanian-Iraqi borders is known as the “55 km area” and is composed of a semi-circle region encircling 55 km of land with al-Tanf Base at its center.

The United States established a based in this area in 2014 with an objective back then to fight the Islamic State.

The war conditions forces tens of thousands of refugees to flee to this area and reside in al-Rukban camp under the protection of the US forces.

With the US decision to withdraw from Syria, the fate of these refugees became unknown.
