The Pros and Cons of raising taxes on imports

One of the biggest problems in Lebanon is the trade deficit, which means the large gap between the imports and the exports that has reached alarming levels.

In 2018, Lebanon imported $20 billion worth of goods, while its exports registered $3 billion.

This comes amid a lack of a serious plan to promote and support local production and protect it from foreign goods.

Consequently, Economy Minister Mansour Bteish suggested a raise on the customs fees by 3% on the imported products, in a bid to promote the purchase of local products.

This proposal includes all products, whether food, medications, electronics and others, even on fuel and gasoline, with the exception of eco-friendly vehicles, raw materials and machinery used by industrialists in Lebanon.
