Qaeda backs off on the release of Saudi deputy consul

A tribal mediator announced on Sunday that al-Qaeda has backed off from the release of Abdallah al-Khalidi, the Saudi deputy consul in the Yemeni port city of Aden, who was abducted in March. Reports stated the abductors are now demanding double the ransom.

Security and tribal sources had earlier reported that al-Qaeda has released Khalidi Sunday at dawn in southern Yemen.

However, one of the tribal mediators in the province of Abin said on Sunday morning that they were surprised by al-Qaeda’s last minute decision to refrain from releasing the diplomat.
