Sidon chokes underneath a cloak of thick smoke

A huge fire erupted in Sidon’s famous garbage dump, unleashing a heavy cloud of smoke which soon spread to the eastern side of the city.    

The fire caused thick clouds of black smoke that covered the entire city.      

Civil Defense teams had difficulty reaching the fire site that was located on the seaside, prompting the municipality to call for the support of LAF choppers and the maritime civil defense teams.        

In this regard, Sidon’s Mayor Mohammad al-Saudi told LBCI that these fires can be prevented if they had been an act of arson.       

“However, this time they occurred by accident”, he confirmed.        

The former mayor of Sidon Abdul Rahman al Bizri had a different opinion as to the cause of the fire, calling on the city’s municipal council to refer immediately to the Public Appeal Prosecution in south Lebanon. “We think that these fires may have been premeditated for financial gain and other purposes well-known by those who work in the environmental sector”.

It is noteworthy that Sidon’s dump caught fire for the third in a fortnight.
