Former Algerian President Chadli BenJadid dies at 83

Former Algerian President Chadli BenJadid died of cancer at an age of 83, Al Arabiya television reported on Saturday.

BenJadid was the third President of Algeria and had ruled from February 9, 1979 to January 11, 1992. His liberal policies gave in 1991 the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) victory in the elections. However, the second round was cancelled by the army, which intervened and forced BenJadid to resign.
