Connelly and Mikati look into proposals of Lebanese leaders

Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with US ambassador Maura Connelly on Tuesday to discuss recent developments in Lebanon and the region.

The U.S. Embassy announced that Connelly and Mikati tackled the American-Lebanese relations, the political and security situation in Lebanon as well as the recent regional developments. Mikati also briefed Connelly on his latest visit to France.

According to a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy, the ambassador and the premiere discussed the latest political events and looked into the latest proposals made by Lebanese leaders regarding the formation of a government that would “reflect the Lebanese people’s aspirations and promote the country’s sovereignty, independence and security following the blast which rocked Achrafieh on October 19, 2012, targeting and killing Major General Wissam Hassan.” Connelly praised the premiere’s efforts to proceed with the dialogue over the formation of a new government.

Connelly voiced the US government’s concern over the increasing humanitarian needs of displaced Syrians who fled to Lebanon to escape the violence sweeping through their country.
