Premiere Mikati calls for Supreme Defense Council meeting on Sunday

Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on Friday that the LAF and ISF are carrying out their duties in controlling the situation in Tripoli and preventing security breaches.

Mikati added that the Cabinet will proceed in taking measures that maintain civil peace and added that this national responsibility needs the cooperation of all leaders who in turn should work for the country's interest.

Mikati mentioned that targeting security forces has negative effects seemingly since no country can rise if its security apparatuses are being attacked.

It is worth mentioning that PM Mikati held a series of meetings at the Grand Serail to discuss the security situation, especially in Tripoli, as well as measures taken in this regard.

For his part, the Army Commander General Jean Kahwaji briefed the Premiere on the measures taken by the LAF in Tripoli.

Mikati also met with the Director General of the Internal Security Forces Major General Ashraf Rifi and Minister of Interior Marwan Charbel whereby it was decided that the latter would visit the northern Lebanese city to chair a sub-security council meeting.

The Premiere also called President Sleiman, who is currently in Greece, and briefed him on the recent developments.

In this framework, PM Mikati called for a Supreme Defense Council meeting on Sunday at the Baabda Palace to discuss the situation in Tripoli.

Separately, Mikati discussed with the Director General of Public Security Major General Abbas Ibrahim the issue of the Lebanese nationals who died in Talkalakh and asked him to follow up on this file with the Syrian authorities in order to receive their bodies in one batch.

Prime Minister Najib Mikati came back on Friday from Italy and had canceled his visit to France-Nice due to the security situation in Tripoli.
