REPORT: Aleppo’s Armenians: Yesterday’s industrialists look today for shelter

Hundreds of Armenian families left Aleppo and came to Beirut, escaping the ongoing conflict in Syria between opposition groups and regime forces.

The majority of the refugees refused to speak in front of the camera or to appear in the media, expressing their concern over Syria and their fear from their future in Lebanon.

In this context, the Armenian Church, schools and associations opened their doors to receive refugees as much as possible, while many fund raisings and meetings were held to help the displaced who found shelter in Lebanon and those who are still struggling in Syria. The first achievement was admitting all the students into schools.

While a small number of refugees were able to find apartments in popular areas in Fanar, Bourj Hammoud, Jdeideh, Antelias and others, the greater number of families is still living at relatives’ houses.
