REPORT: As politicians discuss electoral law, Lebanon sinks further into poverty

At a time when the government is dealing with the series of ranks and salaries as a type of "amenity", Social Affairs Minister Wael Abou Faour revealed that the poverty rate in Lebanon is on a continuous rise.

In this context, the rate of poverty in Beirut has reached 5.8%, and is steadily climbing toward 19.19% in Nabatieh and 19.5% in Mount Lebanon.

As for Bekaa, the South, and the North, the poverty rate is much higher.

In the Bekaa the rate reaches 29.36%; whereas, 42.2% of the South residents live in poverty.

The highest poverty rate is witnessed at the North where it reaches 52.5%, mainly distributed among Akkar, Denniyeh, and Tripoli.

The above mentioned details and numbers make the total number of poor people in Lebanon 28.5%.

These poverty rates hide behind them what is more dangerous; destitution.

Almost 8% of the Lebanese citizens are living in a state of impoverishment and the highest rate of these people is present in the Bekaa, the South, and the North where 17.75% of people living at the North are extremely poor that they cannot ensure food, education, and health care.

All these issues are taking place in Lebanon in light of the electoral and political discussions giving only the chance to the Union Coordinating Committee to realize the risk of these numbers and their repercussions.
