Aoun: Orthodox draft law is not sectarian; Jumblatt “laments his defeat”

            
The head of Change and Reform bloc MP Michel Aoun declared on Friday that some parties are determined to abolish the parliamentary elections, stressing that the Orthodox gathering’s draft law is not sectarian. He noted that the only alternative to this law is a law based on proportional representation and a single electorate district.              

In a televised interview, Aoun said that “the ugliest law Lebanon has witnessed is the 2000 law while the 1960 law was only an attempt to refine it,” pointing out that the proposal of Speaker Nabih Berri does not meet his ambitions.

In this context, he called on President Michel Sleiman not to use his stance against the Orthodox law to exert pressure on the Constitutional Council.          

“I did not celebrate over the Orthodox Gathering law, it is not a victory because victory will be achieved during elections,” he stressed.                   

He noted that the Christians are demanding their independence, 24 years after the Taif Agreement, adding that the Orthodox law is a part of the change and reform which he promised to implement.                 

Answering a question on PSP leader Walid Jumblatt’s stance rejecting the Orthodox law, Aoun responded: “Jumblatt is lamenting his defeat, since he will lose his colony in Chouf and Aley”.
