Rai calls for an electoral law that benefits the nation, not the people

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros Rai hoped on Sunday that the Lebanese politicians will follow the example of the professional and responsible conscience of the Pope Benedict XVI, addressing them by asking: “where is your conscience, when the illegal arms, politically protected, are spreading across the country, while the authority of the State is in a state of negligence, and the innocent people, adults and children, are being abducted for ransom?”

During his holy sermon in Sunday’s mass, Rai continued: “Where is your conscience when you fail to reach an electoral law, after years of discussions and presentations of draft laws?”

In this context, he noted that in case the elections do not take place on its constitutional date, the Lebanese politicians would have abolished the last manifestations of democracy.

On the Syrian crisis, Rai called on the Syrian authorities to hold dialogue and end crimes against humanity committed by the militants, urging foreign countries to halt incitements to violence and war.
