PM-designate Tamam Salam: The incumbent government should supervise the elections

Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam said on Saturday in an exclusive interview with Marcel Ghanem that he shoulders a big responsibility after his designation to head the new cabinet but all the Lebanese parties also share this responsibility, hoping that the consensus over the cabinet's formation will last.
In this context, Salam praised the step taken by National Struggle Front leader Walid Jumblatt, pointing out that his designation "was not about names" but about how to spare Lebanon further deterioration.

Salam also said that the incumbent government should supervise the parliamentary elections, adding that Speaker Berri's role was crucial in his election.

When asked about the stance of Marada leader MP Sleiman Franjieh who boycotted the parliamentary consultations, Salam said: "it was his choice and he might have reasons I am not aware of."

On another note, Salam made it crystal clear that his good relation with Saudi Arabia is ongoing, stressing that the KSA played an outstanding role in Lebanon by upholding unity, sovereignty and independence.

Salam said as well that a political government will be definitely formed after the parliamentary elections, noting that he will hold contacts with all the Lebanese parties in a bid to reach a common ground, adding that no one can impose anything on him.

On elections, Salam pointed out that "the 1960's electoral law is invalid", noting that the upcoming parliamentary elections may be deferred for technical reasons.

Salam also stressed that the policy of dissociation should be implemented by all the factions, called for sparing the country the long-simmering crisis taking place in Syria, and voiced his support to the Syrian revolution.
