FPM puts final touches on appeal to law of Parliament’s mandate extension

A meeting was held on Sunday between caretaker Justice and Labor Ministers Shakib Kortbawi and Salim Jreissati and MP Ibrahim Kanaan, where they put the final touches on the constitutional appeal to the law pertaining to the extension of Parliament’s mandate, to be presented on Monday by the Free Patriotic Movement.

In this context, the constitutional council will have to present a report concerning the appeal within a period of one month, after which the council’s members will hold an open session aimed at discussing the appeal and taking a final decision on whether or not to accept it.

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati signed on Friday the law that extends the mandate of parliament, and referred it to the general secretariat of cabinet which in turn referred it to President Michel Sleiman who signed it.

On Saturday, President Michel Sleiman appealed the law before the constitutional council.
