Kanaan: FPM’s appeal based on principles, not political, electoral interests

Member of the Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan declared on Friday that the constitutional council has been entrusted with discussing an appeal against those who "violated democracy", noting that in case it does not perfectly assume its responsibility, it will "abolish the notion of democracy".              

In a statement to "El Asbou Al-Arabi" magazine, Kanaan denied the existence of any force majeure imposing the extension of the Parliament mandate; stressing that the Free Patriotic Movement’s appeal was based on principles, not related to any political or electoral interests.                  

“We are the representatives of the Lebanese people, we cannot extend our mandate without first asking the people,” he added.                

Asked about the resignation of the FPM deputies, Kanaan pointed out that they are still discussing this option, stating that their move may not lead to a general parliamentary election, but only to sub-elections to fill their seats.                      

Commenting on the hybrid electoral law, MP Kanaan said that he failed to find serious intentions concerning the electoral laws, stressing that the proposals presented have wasted an opportunity to reach a new law.
