Abiad: Self-discipline is now required as restrictions eased

Director of the Rafic Hariri University Hospital Firas Abiad made on Saturday a series of tweets as the number of Coronavirus cases is decreasing in the country and the restrictions are eased.

In his tweets, Abiad stated few general rules that can help “mitigate” the risk of the virus.

“Older patients with comorbidities are at highest risk. They should take maximum precautions. Vaccines decrease the risks considerably though not completely. Face masks and distancing also decrease the risks,” he said.

Abiad also stressed the importance of exposure, noting that the risk increases if “people at gatherings are from outside one’s daily contacts, or from categories not yet vaccinated.”

“The longer the contact, the higher the risk, especially if masks are not being worn,” he added.

“Settings are important. In open air, spread is less likely. Closed spaces tend to be poorly ventilated, and are more risky. Recycled ventilation, with air conditioning, is also risky. The risks are worse if people are not masking, like when eating, drinking, or smoking,” he also noted.

Abiad also said that with the lifting of restrictions, the burden lies now squarely on the individual.”

“Good personal decisions are key and should be based on sound knowledge. Then, self discipline is required. We, and our economy, deserve a break, yet in life, all comes at a price,” he concluded by saying.
