Director of the Rafic Hariri University Hospital Firas Abiad said on Sunday that to protect those refusing vaccination, one should speed up the vaccine drive of those willing, including the young.
“Even if they get infected (very uncommon), it is unlikely they will transmit the virus to the hesitant. Chains of infection in society will be interrupted,” he said in a series of tweet.
Abiad also noted that the percentage of the population that is currently partially vaccinated is still lower than 13%.
“In comparison to other countries, that is not a high number and leaves us vulnerable to a new Covid wave,” he added.
He also stressed that younger individuals are more mobile and more likely to be silent spreaders.
“They also spend longer time in hospital if their infection is severe and that is why vaccinating them is rewarding,” Abiad said.
He voiced hopes that “a much lower age bracket for vaccination will be implemented soon.”
“This is a race. To save lives, we have to be quicker than any new arriving variant,” he concluded by saying.
