REPORT: Mahfoud says UCC will not allow attempts to delay adoption of wage scale

Head of the private school teachers association Nehme Mahfoud stressed that the Union Coordination Committee (UCC) will not allow procrastination attempts by the parliament in the adoption of the series of ranks and salaries, noting that the UCC will sign on Tuesday afternoon the one million signatures petition in order to settle the file.

During a press conference held on Monday, Mahfoud said that "the private schools teachers' syndicate is an independent entity," adding that it is open to holding dialogue with educational institutions.

In this regard, Mahfoud denounced attempts to "steal" the teachers' due salaries, pointing out that the Lebanese judiciary will rule between the expelled teachers and educational institutions.

Cabinet referred the wage scale to Parliament following weeks of nationwide protests on Thursday [March 21st].

The Union Coordination Committee had launched open ended strikes on February 19th 2013 after making repeated calls on then Prime Minister Najib Mikati to validate the new salary scale and consequently refer it to Parliament for ratification.
