Mikati stresses attachment to UNIFIL

PM Najib Mikati stressed that Lebanon is part of the international legitimacy and hence it is committed to the UNIFIL working in south Lebanon to bolster security and stability.

Mikati added that UNIFIL forces help the Lebanese army to fulfill its duties in extending its authority over all Lebanese territories. Mikati met on Wednesday with the UNIFIL commander General Alberto Asarta and discussed the situation in the south and the latest attack against the French contingent working in UNIFIL in south Lebanon.

Mikati renewed during the meeting his condemnation over the attack against UNIFIL forces and described it as an attempt to foment tension in the south and to tamper with stability.

"Targeting the French contingent aims to worsen the relation between Lebanon and France which always stood beside Lebanon and supported it under all circumstances", Mikati said.

Mikati renewed his demand on the international community to support the Lebanese army and by exerting pressure on Israel to stop its daily violations to the Lebanese sovereignty. On the other hand, Asarta said after the meeting "we discussed the situation in the south and ways to handle the problems there".
