Siniora from Tripoli: Lebanon’s Sunnis are wise people, will not be dragged into strife

Former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora said Sunday that Tripoli is fighting Lebanon’s battle against conspiracy and injustice, stressing that the Sunnis in Lebanon are moderate and wise people who will not be dragged into the Syrian regime’s plans to create strife and to sow division.

In a speech he delivered during the opening of a conference held in Tripoli under the title “coexistence in the North, a joint national responsibility”, Siniora noted that the Lebanese recall their painful experience with the Syrian army, stressing that the events that Lebanon has been witnessing since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution are nothing but attempts to create sedition.

In this context, Siniora reiterated the importance of coexistence, freedom, democracy and the principle of power rotation, rejecting any change in Lebanon’s identity.

“We faced tyranny in the past, and we will not surrender again as we refuse prejudice and extremism,” he added.

The former PM called for the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces along the northern and eastern borders, stressing the need to continue the implementation of security plans in Tripoli and to prevent the use of arms.

On another note, he urged the officials to form a neutral cabinet that will put an end to the issue of the extra state weapons.

For his part, March 14 General Secretariat Coordinator Fares Soueid said that the true identity of the city of Tripoli must be revealed, stressing that the issue of the northern city is a national matter.
