Cardinal Rai underscores need to protect Lebanon

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros Rai stressed on Sunday the need to protect Lebanon and to overcome all obstacles hurdling the formation of a new government that pulls the country out of the deteriorating security situation.

"The dangerous security situation comes as a result of car bombs claiming the lives of the country's elites as well as innocent people," Rai said.

Cardinal Rai also highlighted the need to honor the constitutional entitlements, calling on the Lebanese parties to hold the presidential elections on due time.

Separately, Rai denounced the killing of a high-ranking Lebanese figure, noting that the assassination of former minister Mohammad Chatah has dealt a severe blow to Lebanon.

An explosion rocked the Lebanese capital Beirut on Friday, December 27, targeting the convoy of former minister Mohammad Chatah.

Sources at the explosion site said Chatah was on his way to attend a meeting at Beit al-Wasat when the explosion occurred.

The sources added that the explosion was caused by a booby-trapped car, identified as a Nissan, which was parked only one hour before the explosion; however, in information made available to LBCI, the explosive-laden vehicle was identified as a Honda reported stolen in 2012.

The explosion in Beirut's Starco claimed the lives of 7 persons, including former minister Chatah, and injured 71 others.
