President Sleiman follows up on situation in the South, says Lebanon must benefit from international support

President Michel Sleiman followed up Monday on the situation in the South as well as on information regarding Sunday's shelling, stressing the need to implement UNSC Resolution 1701 and to end Israeli shelling, attacks and continuous breaches.

Rockets from Lebanon struck northern Israel on Sunday, causing no injuries but sparking an Israeli reprisal shelling in a rare flare-up between the two countries.

President Sleiman condemned the scuffle that erupted yesterday when mourners at a Lebanese young man’s funeral protested the presence of Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani, lashing out at attempts to undermine public freedoms under any pretext.

Separately, Sleiman telephoned the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, and thanked him for the assistance provided by Saudi Arabia to the Lebanese army.

“The Saudi King’s initiative comes in line with the Kingdom’s stances voicing support to Lebanon over decades of bilateral relations,” Sleiman said.

President Sleiman said Sunday that Saudi Arabia has pledged $3 billion to buy weapons from France to help support and strengthen the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Also on Monday, Sleiman received a phone call from French President Francois Hollande who reiterated his country’s support to Lebanon, noting that France is ready to meet the Lebanese army’s demands through cooperation between Defense Ministries and Army Commands.

On another note, President Sleiman hoped that a new government will be formed early next year in order to meet the constitutional deadlines, starting with holding the presidential elections.

“Lebanon must benefit from the international support currently available,” he added.
