Mikati voices optimism on the formation of a new government

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on Thursday that he is optimistic that a new government may soon be formed.

Mikati’s comments were made following his meeting with Beirut Maronite Bishop Boulos Matar.

“We hope that the Bkerke’s charter will be translated into actions,” he added.

Efforts to form a new government have reached a deadlock, mainly over Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun's refusal to renounce the Energy Ministry portfolio.

However, media reported that a major step forward was made on Wednesday when talks between the FPM and the Future bloc led to a deal to give Aoun a “sovereign portfolio” in addition to another ministry.
