Committee tasked with drafting ministerial statement to convene on Wednesday

The first cabinet session kicked off on Tuesday at the Baabda Presidential Palace under the chairmanship of President Michel Sleiman and upon the invitation of Prime Minister Tammam Salam.

At the beginning of the ministerial session, President Sleiman said the new cabinet reflects the image of the Lebanese nation, stressing the importance of aiding the cabinet and providing it with the appropriate cover to prepare for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

For his part, PM Salam said the new cabinet will work for maintaining the country’s stability, adding that ministers should work on selecting their priorities.

During the session, the committee tasked with drafting the ministerial statement was formed.

The committee, comprised of Ministers Mohammad Fneish, Ali Hassan Khalil, Wael Abou Faour, Sejaan Azzi, Gebran Bassil, Nouhad Mashnouq, and Boutros Harb, is expected to hold its first session on Wednesday at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of PM Salam.

In this regard, sources reported to LBCI that “there is no prior agreement regarding items of the ministerial statement," noting that the concerned parties agreed that it will be brief.

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi said the country’s crisis will reach its end if the atmosphere remains positive in the upcoming 4 months.

Prior to the session, closed-door talks were held between President Sleiman and PM Salam, during which the two officials stressed the importance of speeding up the completion of the ministerial statement in order to garner the confidence of the parliament.

Lebanon announced on February 15 the formation of a new government after more than 10 months of political deadlock.

Following the announcement of the new cabinet, Prime Minister Tammam Salam stressed the importance of creating a positive atmosphere to resume national dialogue in order to resolve all pending issues under the auspices of President Michel Sleiman.
