Car bomb targets army checkpoint near border town of Arsal

A suicide bomber detonated a car bomb at a Lebanese Armed Forces checkpoint in the Wadi Ata area in the border town of Arsal on Saturday, Lebanese security sources said.

"There are dead and wounded among the soldiers," one security source said.

Eyewitnesses said that three soldiers were killed and eight others were injured in the attack.

The Military Prosecution tasked State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr to carry out investigations in Arsal's suicide attack.

This as Liwa Ahrar al-Sunna in Baalbek claimed via its twitter account responsibility for the attack targeting the army's checkpoint, and considered it a revenge to the killing of Sami al-Atrash

Fugitive Sami al-Atrash was killed on Thursday the 27th of March in a shootout as the Lebanese army in the Lebanese border town of Arsal.

Al-Atrash was accused of involvement in car bomb attacks that targeted several Lebanese regions.

The attack hit just hours after a speech by Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who said he was protecting Lebanon by fighting in Syria against Sunni armed men.

The town of Arsal is home to thousands of Syrian refugees and also Syrian rebels and their Lebanese allies who have fled an army advance on the Syrian side of the border.

For his part, Minister of Telecommunication Boutros Harb said that the attack against the Lebanese army targets each Lebanese citizen, urging the swift implementation of the security plan "to put an end for the chaos of weapons."

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil said that the suicide attack targeting the army is an additional proof that "terrorism does not exclude anyone."
