Mufti Qabbani expresses concern over void in the presidency
Grand Mufti of the Republic Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani called on Wednesday for electing a new president within the specified constitutional deadline, expressing his concern over void in the presidency.

Upon his arrival from Bahrain, Mufti Qabbani accused ministers, deputies, and the prime minister of resorting to provocative rhetoric, stressing the necessity of cooperation and respect among Lebanese factions to elect a president.

Qabbani expressed his astonishment over the continuous delay in the electoral process, pointing out that there are no signs of electing a head of state on due time.

Responding to a question related to Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros Rai's visit to the Holy Land, Mufti Qabbani stated that Patriarch Rai is the only decision maker in this issue.

On Friday the 2nd of May, Rai confirmed he would join Pope Francis on his upcoming historic trip to occupied Jerusalem later this month, becoming the first head of Lebanon’s Maronite Church to visit Israel since it was founded in 1948.

Because Lebanon considers itself technically in a state of war with Israel, Lebanese citizens and officials are banned under Lebanese laws from visiting Israel.
