Change and Reform bloc says extension of Sleiman's term undermines democracy
The Change and Reform bloc has reiterated its refusal to the potential extension of President Michel Sleiman's mandate, noting that it undermines democracy.

Following its weekly meeting, the bloc stressed the need to elect a new head of state before the end of the constitutional deadline set for May 25.

"We hope one choice will be made before the end of Sleiman's term," MP Ibrahim Kanaan said.

On another note, MP Kanaan said the bloc will tackle the new wage scale on Wednesday, highlighting the importance of granting employees their rights.

"We hope that outstanding issues linked to the pay scale will be settled," he added.

Commenting on the visit of Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros Rai to the Holy Land, the bloc said the Lebanese law does not forbid such a visit.

Cardinal Rai's visit to Jerusalem has stirred an outcry in Lebanon, which is still technically at war with its southern neighbor Israel.

Rai had announced he would join Pope Francis during a May 24-26 tour of the Holy Land, a visit that would make him the first Maronite patriarch to do so since 1948.
