Change and Reform bloc: Presidential vacuum should be resolved through reconciliation

The Change and Reform bloc MPs held on Tuesday its weekly meeting in Rabieh with talks featuring high on the latest developments in Lebanon and the region.

Following the meeting, MP Ibrahim Kanaan condemned on behalf of the bloc the latest suicide bombing that took place in Beirut's Tayouneh region, adding that security developments should be tackled afar from political polarities.

In a new wave of violence, a suicide bomber blew up his car on Monday night near an army checkpoint in southern Beirut’s Tayouneh region, killing himself and wounding several people watching the FIFA World Cup game in a nearby cafe.

The bombing came just three days after a failed attempt to kill one of the top security officials in Lebanon, which has suffered a wave of sectarian violence linked to the civil war in neighboring Syria.

On Friday the 20th of June, a suicide bomber also blew himself up at a security checkpoint in Lebanon's Daher al-Baydar in the Eastern Bekaa Valley, leaving 1 person killed, an ISF member, and up to 33 wounded.

On another note, Kanaan said that presidential vacuum in the country is the result of intentional actions, adding that Lebanese leaders should resolve this issue through reconciliation.

“What is the fate of the presidency if we do not respect the constitution and the National Pact?” he added.

Lebanon has been plunged in a presidential vacuum since the mandate of President Michel Sleiman ended in May.

Lebanese MPs failed to elect his successor after seven presidential election sessions following a boycott of the majority of March 8 camp MPs, mainly Hezbollah and the Change and Reform bloc, over an ongoing dispute over a consensual candidate.
