The Lebanese Parliament failed to elect a new president due to disputes between the March 8 and 14 camps.
Most of the March 8 alliance's MPs boycotted rounds of elections over their call for an agreement on a consensual president and their rejection to the candidacy of Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea.
On the 31st of May 2013, deputies passed a law to extend the parliament's mandate until the 20th of November 2014 after failing to reach an agreement pertaining to the electoral law.
Former President Michel Sleiman and the Free Patriotic Movement voiced their utmost objection to the aforementioned move, citing unconstitutionality as the main reason.
However, stagnation remains on both the parliamentary and presidential electoral levels leading to further security breaches in the country.
