Jumblatt denies PSP’s intention to withdraw MP Helou’s candidacy
The head of the Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblatt denied reports on Wednesday stating that the National Struggle Front has been considering the withdrawal of the candidacy of MP Michel Helou for the presidential elections.

In a statement to al-Anbaa website, Jumblatt stressed the need to maintain Helou’s nomination, “since it may represent the sole solution to the current presidential impasse amid the wide divisions and alignments in the country.”

In this regard, Jumblatt urged the political powers to attend the parliamentary electoral session in order to carry out their democratic duties and elect a new president.

Lebanon officially entered a state of presidential vacuum on May 25 after the six-year term of former President Michel Sleiman expired.

This comes after lawmakers failed several times to choose a successor to the head of state. The impasse highlights the stark political divisions in the country.
