Rescue operations called off, death toll stands at 27

Rescue operations were called off Tuesday morning and rescue vehicles were pulled out as Interior Minister Marwan Charbel announced that operations at the Achrafieh building collapse site have ended. The death toll from Sunday’s building collapse in Fassouh stands at 27.

The collapse injured 12 people who were rushed to near-by hospitals such as Baabda governmental hospital, Roum Hospital, Jeitaoui hospital and Rafik Hariri University Hospital.

Information regarding the fate of two Sudanese citizens gone missing were conflicting, while rubble was removed and dirt overturned more than once in an attempt to find all the bodies.

Charbel said that no bodies remain in the rubble, adding that those who were considered as missing are foreigners residing illegally in Lebanon who have not reported themselves to authorities out of fear that legal measures will be taken against them.
