Harb presents new presidential initiative to Speaker Berri
Telecommunication Minister Boutros Harb stated on Monday that he presented to House Speaker Nabih Berri a new initiative that aims at ending the presidential deadlock.

Harb said in a press conference that MPs have the right to boycott parliamentary sessions; however, emphasized that they should not exploit their rights to obstruct the work of constitutional institutions.

He also noted that the election of a president is no longer a matter of presidential race, stressing that it has become related to the existence of the Lebanese state.

In this regard, Harb called on officials to resort to the provisions of the Lebanese constitution, urging them to refer to article 49 of the constitution and elect a president by the majority of votes.

He also stressed that officials disrupting the election of a president are seeking the prolongation of the parliament's mandate.

Lebanon has been plunged in a presidential vacuum since the mandate of President Michel Sleiman ended in May.

Lebanese MPs failed to elect his successor following a boycott of the majority of March 8 camp MPs, mainly Hezbollah and the Change and Reform bloc, over an ongoing dispute over a consensual candidate.
