Minister of Foreign Affairs Gebran Bassil said on Wednesday that the developments in Iraq and Syria threaten the fate of Christians in the region.

"The persecution is aimed at erasing the message, identity and role of Christianity in the region," he added.

Bassil's comments were made following the Change and Reform bloc's weekly meeting whereby he called on the International community to take action and thwart the immigration of Christians from the Middle East.

He also called on the Christians in Lebanon to remain true to their faith, urging Muslims all over the world to assume their responsibilities regarding the "tarnishing if Islam's image."

As for the parliamentary elections, Bassil urged lawmakers to draft an electoral law that grants Christians apt representation.

He also slammed the attempts of some sides to elect a president that does not represent Christians fairly.

Speaker Nabih Berri deferred on Tuesday (August 12) the session tasked to elect a new president until September 2 for lack of required quorum.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum after Michel Sleiman's mandate ended on May 25 with rival political blocs still divided over a new leader.

Prior to last week's session, nine electoral sessions were held, but parliament has failed so far to elect a new head of state due to lack of quorum.

Last year, the parliament extended its mandate to November 2014 citing security reasons as the motive.

Proclaiming a "caliphate" straddling parts of Iraq and Syria, Islamic State has overrun broad swathes of Sunni Muslim-populated northern and western Iraq with little resistance.

They have pushed back Kurdish regional forces allied with the Baghdad central government and driven tens of thousands of minority communities including Christians and Yazidis from their homes.
