In the same context, he added that the tragedy of the Lebanese people lies in the fact that the politicians are still exercising the policy of tyranny, arrogance and injustice, “a practice that is causing the suffering of the citizens who are deprived of their basic rights while they pay the price of the security chaos,” he said.
In his holy sermon delivered during Sunday’s mass at Bkerke, Patriarch Rai said that the political and sectarian divisions, their intransigence in positions and the insistence on prioritizing personal and factional interests above national matters, have led to a grave violation of the constitution, which is represented by the failure of electing a new president for months, and in turn paralyzing the constitutional institutions.
In this regard, Rai noted that the president is the head of the state, with its land and people, as well as its political, administrative, judicial and military institutions, making him a symbol of national unity.
“Maybe the Lebanese deputies refuse to elect a new president so they can keep on spreading chaos and covering corruption,” he stated, stressing that nothing is more important than the presidency, which preserves the interests of the country.
“The silence of the citizens does not mean that they support these unjust authoritarian political practices, but it means that they have lost confidence in their representatives, which is far more dangerous,” Rai concluded, reiterating the call for electing a new president the soonest possible.
