Grand Mufti visits Qabalan, calls on Muslims and Christians to stand united against terrorism
Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel Latif Daryan warned on Tuesday against the results of the presidential vacuum at the Baabda Palace, reiterating that "terrorism has no religion."

Daryan's comments were made following a visit to the deputy head of the Higher Shiite Islamic Council, Sheikh Abdel Amir Qabalan.

“After the extension of parliament's mandate, it is time to hold the presidential elections,” Daryan added.

Daryan also stressed that “terrorism does not represent any religion. It is the responsibility of both Muslims and Christians to address it because its dangers affect not only Shiites, Christians or Sunnis but the entire nation.”

“Muslims should work together to consolidate Lebanon's national unity and preserve the country,” he added.

Qabalan also urged Muslims and Christians to stand united against sedition and exert efforts to maintain Lebanon's stability.

Lebanon has been without a president since May when President Michel Sleiman's mandate ended amid the failure of the rival Lebanese lawmakers to find a successor.

Last week, lawmakers voted to extend the parliament's term by another two years and seven months, skipping scheduled parliamentary elections for the second time.

The MPs claimed they needed to stay in office because Lebanon's security situation is too dire to allow holding elections amid neighboring Syria's civil war.

Clashes linked to Syria's war have broken out with increasing regularity. The latest threat comes from extremists that have engaged in battles with the Lebanese army in areas near the border with Syria and in northern Lebanon.
