Tourism Minister says food contamination rates in Lebanon 'the lowest' in the region

Tourism Minister Michel Pharaon said corruption is widespread in all state sectors, noting that "tourism institutions cannot do the work of the Health Ministry".

"Food contamination rates in Lebanon are the lowest in the region," the minister said in a press conference on Monday, adding "cases of Salmonella cannot be totally avoided".

"Coordination is ongoing between the tourism, economy, industry and health ministries regarding the food safety case," Pharaon noted, saying "Health Minister Wael Abou Faour has fulfilled his duties".

The minister also asked the Lebanese media to seek accuracy and transparency in circulating facts, urging support for the Ministry of Tourism.

Lebanon's Health Minister Wael Abou Faour has launched a food safety campaign whereby he unveiled two lists of violating restaurants and supermarkets across the country.

Abou Faour warned of unsuitable foodstuffs being sold to the Lebanese public, noting that several food providers have fallen short of meeting the proper health standards.

On Thursday, Pharaon stressed the need to proceed with the monitoring process of Lebanese restaurants and organizations and to hold accountable the traders who sell meat to restaurants.

The minister also questioned some samples taken from well-known organizations in terms of public hygiene standards, accusing Abou Faour of harming the tourism sector.
