Ministry of Culture replies to Jumblatt, clarifies demolition of historic Beirut building
The Ministry of Culture issued on Thursday a statement in which it replied to Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt’s accusation of destroying a “historic Beirut building.”

The Ministry noted that it is deploying its utmost efforts to save historic buildings, adding that it will submit a draft law in this regard.

In the statement, the Ministry added that the preservation of Beirut’s historic buildings should be the duty of several ministries, not only the ministry of culture.

The Ministry stressed in the statement that it tried to save the building by freezing the demolition request, but was overruled by the Shura Council, a body that checks the legality of administrative decisions and whose decision is final.

On Monday, MP Walid Jumblatt blamed the Ministry of Culture and the governor of Beirut for the ongoing demolition of the historic Art Deco building in the region of Gemmayzeh.
