Patriarch Rai criticizes work of cabinet, urges end to presidential vacuum
Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai criticized on Sunday the work of the cabinet, stressing that the government should not carry its duties presuming that the presidential vacuum is a “normal” crisis.

Rai’s comments were made during his Sunday’s sermon at Bkerke in which he stressed that the cabinet has no authority to carry out the duties of the president “unless it is done according to consensus and without violating the constitution.”

In line with the constitution, the cabinet began exercising the president’s duties after the parliament failed to elect a successor for Michel Sleiman, whose mandate ended in May last year.
