Patriarch Rai urges lawmakers to elect a new president
Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai reiterated calls on Sunday on Lebanese lawmakers to attend parliament sessions and elect a new president.
“The people are suffering on all levels” due to the ongoing presidential vacuum at the Baabda Palace, Rai said during his Sunday sermon at Bkerke.

“The Lebanese people, who according to the Lebanese Constitution is the source of all power carried out at state institutions, tasked you with these duties,” Rai added.

Vacuum striking the presidential post is having a tough repercussions on the cabinet and the parliament as the state is threatened with additional crises over ongoing disputes between the political rivals.

Lawmakers failed on several occasions to elect a new President over lack of quorum.

President Michel Sleiman's mandate ended in May without the election of a successor.
