Maronite Patriarch Rai laments Lebanon’s presidential vacuum
Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai lamented on Sunday  Lebanon’s presidential vacuum, which is entering its one-year mark, saying that the past 12 months have marked a large failure for the country.

Rai’s comments were made during his weekly sermon for Sunday mass.

Last week, Lebanese MPs failed in their 23 consecutive session to elect a new president after the mandate of former President Michel Sleiman ended last May.

Lawmakers from Michel Aoun’s Change and Reform bloc, Hezbollah MPs and their March 8 allies have thwarted a quorum since April 2014 by boycotting parliamentary sessions tasked to elect a new president.

Rai said Sunday that six months after MPs extended their term by an additional two years and seven months; they have yet to elect a new president or draft a new electoral law.

He said that MPs who have boycotted the presidential elections have not lived up to their national duties, adding that it was high time for the “national conscious” to find initiatives that would fill the presidential vacuum.
