Lebanon’s Justice Minister Rifi vows to punish killers of 4 judges

Minister of Justice Ashraf Rifi stressed on Monday that “justice will continue to take its course” as he marked the anniversary of the murder of four judges in Sidon, south Lebanon.

“Justice is the guarantor for the state's existence,” Rifi noted in a televised speech, saying “we won't rest until the judges’ killers receive their punishment”.

“It is high time that the [Lebanese] state pays attention to the safety of judges and the security of Justice Palaces,” the minister said, adding “the state has the duty to protect them from hazards.

“Lebanon’s judges have proved to be trustworthy, they know their task is difficult and the people count on them,” Rifi said.

On June 8, 1999, judges Hassan Uthman, Walid Harmoush, Assem Bu Daher and Imad Shehab were attending a session during the trial of two Iraqis and a Palestinian in the South Lebanon Criminal Court at the old Justice Palace in Sidon, when two individuals opened fire through the rear window of the court room, killing the judges and wounding five others.

Judicial figures pledged to work for the truth behind their assassination; nonetheless, the judiciary has failed to uncover the details of the crime.
