Health Minister Abou Faour says advisory committee set up to probe medical errors

Health Minister Wael Abou Faour stressed on Monday the need to close the case of Ella Tannous, a child whose limbs had to be amputated, on clearly-defined grounds in a way that guarantees the rights of both patient and doctor.

“The Ministry of Health did not intervene in dealing with the concerned doctor,” Abou Faour said in a press conference, noting that the pediatrician is “a competent man”.

“We reject a campaign of intimidation directed against the [Health] Ministry and the judiciary,” he said, adding that an investigation held at the Order of Physicians with Dr. Issam Maalouf must be completed.

“Immunity is not granted to any doctor,” the minister noted, saying “an advisory committee made up of 14 doctors and specialists was set up to probe medical errors”.

The attorney representing the case of Ella Tannous raised on Friday (June 12) an appeal against the release of pediatrician Dr. Issam Maalouf on a LBP 100 million bail.

On Wednesday (June 10), Beirut’s investigative judge ordered the release of Dr. Maalouf after questioning him in the presence of his attorney Sakher Al-Hachem and Dr. Jean Boulos, a representative of the Order of Physicians.

Following the session, attorney Al-Hachem noted that Maalouf did not misdiagnose the case of Ella Tannous.
