Following a meeting for a ministerial committee tasked with discussing this issue, Minister Mashnouq noted that the committee had agreed on the balanced distribution of garbage in Beirut and Mount Lebanon to newly established landfills.
Mashnouq also said that the committee, chaired by Prime Minister Tammam Salam, had approved financial incentives for municipalities where new landfills will be allocated, adding that it will continue its discussions tomorrow (Tuesday) at 4 pm.
Following the emergence of this agreement, Sukleen waste collectors began removing garbage from the streets of Beirut.
Meanwhile, civil society activists voiced their rejection to the agreement reached by the ministerial committee, calling for mass participation in a protest at Beirut's Riad El-Soleh’s Square, to voice rejection to the Lebanese authorities’ failure to resolve the pressing waste issue, in a sustainable, eco-friendly manner.
