Municipality of Naameh: We reject the reopening of the landfill even for a single hour

The municipality of south of Beirut town of Naameh rejected on Friday the reopening of the landfill, voicing hopes that the issue won't be discussed by the Lebanese leaders.

“Our town suffered for 18 years from the dangers and negative health, environmental and social repercussions of the landfill,” said a statement issued by the Naameh’s municipal council.

“The roads of our town, which has been a passage for waste trucks, is in very bad condition and need huge sums of money for rehabilitation,” it said.

Given these conditions, “the town's council unanimously decided to reject the reopening of the landfill even for a single hour,” the statement explained.

The Naameh landfill opened in 1997. It was meant to receive trash from Beirut and the heavily-populated Mount Lebanon regions for few years until a comprehensive solution was devised.

But that plan never came to completion, as efforts to pass waste legislation faded away.

But the landfill was closed last July, leading to a waste crisis in the country causing anti-government street protests, with some turning violent.
