US Ambassador Hale: The right to “peaceful, non-violent protest” must be respected
US Ambassador to Lebanon David Hale called on Thursday for the swift election of a new president for the country as he stressed the importance of protecting the right to “peaceful, non-violent protest.”

“The international community reiterates its support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, security and stability which is as strong as ever,” he noted after meeting Prime Minister Tammam Salam at the Grand Serail.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since Michel Sleiman's mandate ended in May 2014. Deep disputes and electoral rivalry have prevented quorum in more than 20 election sessions in parliament.

Commenting on the street protests in the country, Hale said he discussed with Salam “the importance of one of our shared core values, the right of free speech and assembly.”

“Peaceful, non-violent protest is an integral part of our two nations' histories, and enshrined in both of our constitutions,” he added.

A growing protest campaign that started with frustration over the waste management crisis has led to anger at a corrupt political class.
