Rai: What is happening in Syria is genocide

Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai reiterated Monday his support for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), insisting that the truth must be revealed and justice reached.

Rai urged the international community, particularly France, prior to his meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, not to toy with peoples’ fates or rush into changing their regimes.

Rai wondered: “Are we headed towards a Sunni-Alawite civil war in Syria?”, describing what is happening there as genocide.

Rai met later with Sarkozy to discuss the UNIFIL situation in Lebanon, highlighting the importance of protecting Middle East minorities and settling disputes without resorting to force.
