President Aoun: Lebanon is going to hell if government not formed
President Michel Aoun said on Monday that the country was going "to hell" if a government was not formed, as French efforts to encourage the formation of a new cabinet falter.
Asked where Lebanon was headed if there was no agreement among its fractious leaders, he responded: "Of course - to hell."
Asked whether his televised address meant there was no hope for a breakthrough, Aoun told reporters: "No, there might be a miracle."
Aoun also noted that Prime Minister-designate Mostapha Adib visited him four times, adding that Adib did not submit any Cabinet lineup or names to him.
“The Lebanese Constitution does not allocate any ministry to any sect or any political power,” Aoun added.
“The toughening of each side’s position will not lead us to any result, except for more aggravation, while what Lebanon needs the most, in light of all its successive crises, is some solution and solidarity so that it can rise and confront its problems,” the president went on by saying.
Aoun then suggested abolishing the sectarian distribution of ministerial portfolios, known as sovereign, and not allocating them to specific sects but rather making them available to all sects.
