Rai stresses his duty to all Christians in the region
Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai stressed that he is not a politician nor is he a statesman, saying that he is only a patriarch who will visit U.S. parishes without meeting U.S. President Barack Obama.

Speaking on the spiritual regional summit to be convened by Rai, the patriarch said: “This summit will play an important role in breaking the ice. It will also be an opportunity to evoke Christian and Muslim tenets.”

Asked about whether his latest stances reflect the Vatican’s point of view, Rai said: “To see if the Vatican or the pope back my remarks, you can read the latest statements they issued.”

Rai added that it is his duty to visit all Jordanian, Syrian and Arab parishes, “not to forget parishes in the occupied Arab holy land”.

Rai left for the U.S. on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on board a privately owned airplane. Rai was accompanied by Bishop Boulos Al Sayeh along with his advisor and lawyer Walid Ghayad.
